Nupona, formerly East Coast Stormwater, is a civil engineering company focused on sustainable stormwater solutions for property owners in Raleigh and Durham, North Carolina. Their goal is to preserve as much of the natural environment as possible while staying devoted to the communities and land they serve.
Nupona came to us for help enhancing the company’s brand through messaging and a visual logo identity to help strengthen the company’s presence online and in the community. They wanted their brand to speak more to the owner’s Native American heritage and to grow with the business as they expand in the future. After solidifying the new brand, we helped with a strategy to get the brand out into the wild.
Our process began with interviews with the owner to understand his vision for the business, the words he would use to describe his business, and what his vision for the company is. From the beginning, our team dug in, researching to come up with target audiences, a brand personality, a brand name, and a tagline. This led to the development of core brand messaging and pop messaging, concluding with the visual identity and complete brand guide.

NAME MEANING:
In the regional language of my descendants, derived from the Algonquian language family, “Nupuy” means “water,” and “Menatona” means “the one who listens well.” We combined these words to form a new word. “Nupuy” + “Menatona” = “Nupona,” meaning “One who listens well to the water.”

On its journey from sky to stream, stormwater collects toxins and distributes them throughout our communities, ecosystems, and water sources. Stormwater pays no mind to municipal boundaries or federal regulations, affecting urban, suburban, and rural communities all the same. Stormwater issues are inclusive of all of us. As a member of the Lumbee tribe of North Carolina, I’ve always felt a deep connection to our land and the preservation of it. The older I’ve grown, the more I’ve come to know we are each responsible for nurturing our environment. This awareness has led me to use my 20+ years of engineering experience for environmental preservation through the handling of stormwater.
Thus, Nupona was born.
